The Freshers' Ball is a smart event.  Dress as if you were going on a classy night out into town (students quickly become accustomed to going out in jeans and trainers every night because so many places in Southampton allow you in dressed however you please!) so nice clothes, smart shoes etc.  It's not quite as smart as black tie and ballgowns, but you want to "dress to impress"!
