Why do we have to pay for gym membership as well as athletic union money just to play netball less than once a week? ?

Im answering this question assuming assume that it refers to the University Netball Club?! [If the question is about inter mural netball you only need gym membership and not AU membership] Basically the £15 AU membership which is a one-off payment and lasts you for your entire time at University. It pays for insurance, which covers you for any accident that you may have whilst playing for the Netball team. Sportrec membership, which you purchase annualy (£65), is your payment for using the facilities each year. The AU President has recently taken a proposal to sport rec to ask for the pricing structure to be tiered so that one price covers the use of facilities only and the second tier includes use of the Gym and Pool. Unfortunately this proposal was unsuccessful so all students will have to continue to pay one price even if they dont use the Gym or Pool. It might be worth noting that we are still one of the cheapest universities in the South. Moreover, by using the facilities once a week, for 30 weeks a year you are only having to pay £2 per session!
